Tanya’s Score: Good*
Rated: 14A
Starring: A Gone Girl; A Fifty-Shaded Guy
Plot: A film based on the true experiences of lauded war correspondent Marie Colvin (Rosamund Pike) as she fearlessly goes from one war conflict to another in order to record the invaluable stories she uncovers.
Tanya’s Verdict: According to Abraham Lincoln, “Actions speak louder than words” – but in Marie Colvin’s case, her actions play an equal role with her words. After all, her courageous actions are what led to her words being heard globally – giving a voice to the voiceless, opening people’s eyes to what is happening outside of their protective bubble.
This movie is made up of two distinct scenes – Marie in war-torn conflict, bringing humanity to the atrocities she is witness to through her writing; and Marie back in England dealing with bureaucracy and being awarded for her efforts.
It was this back and forth that caused the movie to lag here and there. The scenes were still riveting but there was no momentum driving them forward and so the jumpiness became tired and tedious.
Still – a wonderful performance by Pike and even Jamie Dornan (not a particular favourite of mine) did well as Colvin’s photographer friend. This movie does well as a tribute to Colvin – despite its heavy-handedness.
In my case, this movie was the perfect way to show my kids there is more to their world than they think and that the written word wields power and should never ever be taken for granted.
