A humdrum movie with a great ending.

Rated: 14A

Starring: Shailene Woodley, Shailene Woodley’s nipples, Sam Claflin, I’m assuming Sam Claflin’s nipples as well

Plot: Based on a true story, Tami (Woodley) and Richard (Claflin) undertake the job of sailing a boat from Tahiti to San Diego and must fight for survival after encountering a devastating hurricane.

Tanya’s Verdict: There’s a lot about Adrift that I truly liked. For instance, I liked the fact that this inspirational movie is based on fact; I liked that the film’s main focus is that of a strong and resilient young woman; and I loved the ending.

But I found the first 90 minutes of the movie predictable and unexciting. The flashback sequences did nothing to build momentum toward the movie’s ultimately tense and strong conclusion.

A compelling survival story does not necessarily require a lot of moving parts – case in point: Cast Away (2000) and All is Lost (2013) – yet both are amazing films. But for some reason, Adrift falls flat and as a result is lost at sea.
