Odd. In a dull and forgettable kind of way.

Tanya’s Score: Okay*

Rated: 14A

Starring: a bunch of vaguely recognizable actors; John Malkovich

Plot: A naive young man (Max Minghella) enters art school, falls in love, becomes embroiled in a serial murder investigation and realizes the world doesn’t work the way he always believed.

Tanya’s Verdict: I’m missing something here. In my memory – when first watching this movie, I quite enjoyed it. It was funny in a satirical way and quirky in a comical way. And for some reason, I own the DVD – so case in point – I must have really liked it once upon a time.

But after re-watching it – I don’t get it. It’s not quite as funny as I remember. Nor as quirky as I remember. In fact, the whole thing is kind of dull and forgettable. So what’s going on here? Did I like it once upon a time? Or just think I liked it once upon a time?

All I can say with certainty is that my kids were pissed after watching it – and it will probably be a while before I’m allowed to choose our movie for family movie night.

  1. I went to Art School and I have to say, the way art class is presented in this movie (as well as with Ghost World) is exactly how Art School is. It has been a long time since I saw this movie but I liked it at the time mainly because it exposed some of the subjective inanity of the Art School experience.
