A modern-day parable pitting corporate greed against holistic spirituality.

Rated: 14A

Starring: A frumpy (although nowhere near the Frida level) Salma Hayek and a more-pompous/less-bumbling John Lithgow.

Plot: Beatriz is a hard-working massage therapist and self-proclaimed healer who unexpectedly finds herself at a dinner party amongst a group of extremely wealthy individuals. She and Doug (Lithgow) butt heads on many issues but namely on their respective life outlooks and definition of success.

Tanya’s Verdict: This movie is highly conversation-based and offers many close-ups of facial expressions and reactions making it very character-driven (as opposed to plot-driven). The majority of this 89 minute movie take place in one location – at a California mansion during the course of a dinner party. This film is reminiscent of the 2011 movie Carnage – it feels more like a play than a movie. While I found it an interesting concept – especially the fact that both Hayek’s character as well as Lithgow’s are equally unsympathetic as well as downright annoying at times – the movie was still a bit under-whelming to me. I expected more. In the end, it was fine – but not necessarily theatre-worthy.
