A good movie with two great actors.

Tanya’s Score: Good*

Rated: 14A

Starring: L’il Timmy and Michael Scott

Plot: Based on respective father and son memoirs, this is a true story chronicling the love, heartache, despair and inspiration of a family threatened by a young man’s addictions.

Tanya’s Verdict: This movie was good, don’t get me wrong. It’s just that about 90 minutes into it, I was a bit weary of the “he’s quitting / nope he’s not” song and dance. But what can you do, this movie was based on a true story. That said, it still makes for pretty compelling viewing (for the most part). For me, the film’s highlight is the chemistry between the father/son leads played by Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet. These two acted their hearts out. There is a specific scene where the two of them meet up at a diner and son Nic asks his father for some money. As much as the audience knows that father David would do anything for his son, even give him the money he asks for, he denies him. Chalamet’s acting here gave me shivers. This kid has proven himself time and again (in Ladybird and Call Me By Your Name – both best pic nominees in 2018). He’s clearly going places.
