Tanya’s Verdict: This movie has a bit of everything: action, romance, double-crossing, armour-clad rhinos and Michael B. Jordan in dreadlocks. There are plenty of positive messages within including the strong and positive representation of black characters as well as female empowerment; and interesting themes such as loyalty (to people versus throne) and moral obligations (personal versus tribal). Black Panther is definitely not your run-of-the-mill superhero film – which I was counting on as I’m not a big fan of those. Nevertheless – it still didn’t strike my fancy. I enjoyed parts of it, took a bit of a nap and woke up to enjoy more bits and pieces of the action-packed plot line. While I can definitely see what all the hype is about – Black Panther still wasn’t my cup of tea. Surprisingly, my children weren’t fans of it either.
