Rated: 14A
Starring: horny teenagers, bumbling adults
Plot: Three parents (Leslie Mann, John Cena and Ike Barinholtz) are in hot pursuit of their respective daughters on prom night – in order to stop them from losing their virginity.
Tanya’s Verdict: I’ll admit – I didn’t have high expectations for this one. And I was rewarded with some out-and-out hilarity. The plot is silly and reminiscent of American Pie – or any 80s screwball sex comedy – except with the added twist of the parents’ POV. My biggest complaint was how uneven the movie was at times. Rather than sticking to strictly funny, it injected some heart-felt (read: sappy) moments throughout which caused some awkward imbalances. In my opinion, the parental scenes were far funnier than anything the kids had going on. And the brief gag involving two over-sexed parents (played perfectly by Gary Cole and Gina Gershon) was the best thing about the entire movie. A particular scene involving sub-titles had me choking on my popcorn!
One major disappointment of note: a hilarious scene involving John Cena and Ike Barinholtz on a hotel balcony which was featured in the movie’s trailer was cut from the actual film.
