Tanya’s Score: Great*
Rated: PG
Starring: NYC columnists Jimmy Breslin and Pete Hamill
Plot: A documentary focussing on the journalistic work of two New York City newspaper columnists.
Tanya’s Verdict: I happened upon this film by accident and was completely blown away. From the beginning until the very end, I was riveted by the story of these two men – largely uneducated (in the traditional sense), both from Irish American households – and how their writing affected and transformed society around them.
Consisting of old interview footage as well as conversations with former co-workers, family members and friends, this movie follows both men’s careers via the columns they wrote, the important events they covered and the social injustices they toppled.
Writing can inform, it can entertain and teach, it can effect change and inspire hope. I loved this movie.
