An inspiring true story about an interesting real kid . . . but the movie’s meh.

Tanya’s Score: Okay*

Rated: PG-13

Starring: Julia Salinger; the funny guy from Get Out

Plot: Based on the true story of teenager Zach Sobiech – who, when finding out his cancer was terminal, followed his dream of song writing and performing.

Tanya’s Verdict: Years ago, I watched an episode of the documentary series My Last Days which featured Zach Sobiech and his family. I found it compelling and moving. Who was this kid? I dug deeper into his story and found a celebrity-studded lip synch made to his signature song “Clouds”, presented to him as a surprise. Watch it here – it’s good.

So when I found out there was a movie – based on his life – currently streaming on Disney+, I urged the kids to join me in watching it. But it was disappointing, to say the least.

It dropped the ball – at least in the beginning. By the time I got to the last third of the film, I felt there was finally some real momentum with the storyline. I became more engaged with the character of Zach as he became focussed on writing and performing his lasting legacy. But based on the first two thirds of Clouds, I could have just as easily have turned it off before getting to that point.

Don’t let this mediocre movie steal the thunder away from this incredible kid who accomplished in a few months what many never will.

Four score descriptions: Sh**; Okay; Good; Great
