Starring: big-eyed and big-banged Anne Hathaway, a dark and broody Jason Sudeikis, “go back to Downton” Dan Stevens
Plot: Gloria’s (Hathaway) life in New York has fallen apart both professionally and romantically so she moves back home to her small-town. She reconnects with friends from the past, finds a job at a local bar but still seems to be going nowhere fast. Coinciding with her move home, a large godzilla-esque creature begins attacking Seoul, Korea. Gloria soon makes the startling discovery that she shares a direct connection to this creature and can impact its behaviour.
Tanya’s verdict: Kind of sci-fi, kind of comedy, kind of supernatural, kind of drama – this movie is a melting-pot of genres which is fine by me. It’s nice to watch something that can’t be slotted into a box. Still – I’m not sure I liked it all that much. From what I recall, it was given rave reviews when it burst on the scene last year – yet I’m uncertain that it lives up to the hoopla. I enjoyed it for the most part – I liked how the movie gradually twists from one genre to the next and how it proceeded to turn dark as Sudeikis’ character transforms from seemingly happy-go-lucky to dark and disturbed. The film barrels toward its conclusion – a deep secret that explains everything – but in my opinion, that’s where the whole thing unravels.
