Rated: PG
Starring: Dracula, Cinderella, “Pope”
Plot: The movie follows Winston Churchill’s first month in office as Britain’s PM and how he handles all dealings involving WWII.
Tanya’s Verdict: In my opinion (and remember – this type of movie is not necessarily my cup of tea), Darkest Hour starts off slowly but begins to gather steam ending on a powerful note. The parts I most enjoyed are the one-on-one scenes involving Churchill (Gary Oldman) – with his wife (Kristin Scott Thomas), his secretary (Lily James) and the King (my not-so-secret crush Ben Mendelsohn). Churchill’s amusing quirks and witty quips are well-displayed during these more intimate scenes. My favourite scene though shows Churchill riding the underground with a group of star-struck citizens. The film also highlights Churchill’s knack for speech-writing as well as his compelling public speaking skills. Gary Oldman is amazing as usual and I’ll be surprised if he is not awarded the Oscar for best actor.
