Dunkirk: this desperate tale of survival does not disappoint.

Rated: PG

Starring: A bunch of vaguely familiar young men, a bunch of unknowns and also: Tom Hardy, Harry Styles, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh

Plot: It’s WWII and 400,000 mostly British and French soldiers are surrounded by Germans in an area of France called Dunkirk. The war rages on as the men struggle to survive and evacuate the area by ship or boat.

Tanya’s Verdict: This fast-paced and gripping movie follows three slightly overlapping timelines that show the harrowing battle of Dunkirk from air, land and sea. Dialogue is minimal as is on-screen gore – but the desperate and violent confusion that is war comes through loud and clear. My favourite parts of the movie were the brief glimpses of humanity interwoven throughout: a man desperate to take a crap, a soldier taking control of his own death by swimming out to sea, a teenager showing compassion to a shell-shocked soldier by lying to him about an accidental death he has caused. We went as a family to see this film – and everyone was entertained. I loved it.
