Overly sentimental and manipulative – maybe . . . but I still liked it.

Rated: PG

Starring: a post-Kip Tom Hanks, a post-Gidget Sally Field, a pre-Jack Garrett Gary Sinise

Plot: A man born with a low I.Q. yet a remarkably unassuming charisma makes his way through life and all its many adventures.

Tanya’s Verdict: So the critics say the movie is contrived, manipulative, highly-sentimental and overrated. Perhaps. Apparently, there’s not much middle ground when it comes to how viewers feel about Forrest Gump – they either love it or hate it.  But the fact is I liked it when I watched it in the theatres back in 1994 and I liked it now the second-time-around. I can agree that it may be a tad simplistic when it comes to touching upon certain issues but sometimes there’s nothing wrong with a simple story designed to entertain and pull on the heartstrings. It’s a heartwarming movie ideal to watch as a family . . . also you can love it or hate it – but it won six Oscars at the 1995 Academy Awards including for best movie, director and actor.
