Girls are funny – as this movie will prove.

Rated: 14A

Starring: comedy it girl Amy Schumer, several SNLers, elfin-voiced Michelle Williams

Plot: Renee Bennett (Schumer) is an ordinary girl suffering from low self-esteem, until a bump to the head leads her to believe she is a ten.

Tanya’s Verdict: Confidence matters – but so does balance – as I Feel Pretty shows in exaggerated and comical fashion. While this movie wasn’t amazing, it was pretty funny and I enjoyed myself as (I assume) the audience within my packed theatre did as well. I think Amy Schumer has found the delicate balance between comedy and vulgarity in order to hit the nail on the head for target market with this movie. Don’t get me wrong – I’m a fan of vulgarity – so long as it’s funny (that’s why I enjoyed her movie Trainwreck but am not a fan of the Netflix show Big Mouth which in my opinion is vulgar without being funny.) The theatre was packed full of teen girls – which would not have been the case had this been rated 18A (such was Trainwreck).

And while the movie was definitely silly – even venturing into run-of-the-mill toilet humour at times, I laughed throughout. It also had a positive message as well as an element of truth to it.

It felt good taking my girls to see this. It brings home several important points: that girls can be funny; girls can be self-deprecating; girls can be confident; girls can be ambitious – sometimes all at the same time.
