A pretty good film – just 20 minutes shy of being a pretty great film.

Rated: 14A

Starring: a tacky Margot Robbie and a trashy Allison Janney

Plot: Based on the true story of American figure skater Tonya Harding, her hard-scrabble rise to fame and the “incident” which derailed her career and life.

Tanya’s Verdict: The way the movie is filmed and events are portrayed is a major part of I, Tonya‘s allure. Throughout the film, characters routinely face the camera as if being interviewed and at times even make direct asides to speak directly to viewers. With the myriad of interesting and out-of-the-ordinary characters and the way the movie unfolds, there is a distinct Coen brothers type of feel to the movie. That said, I felt it started to drag during the final third. All in all, a pretty good film – cut out an extraneous 20 minutes from the final third and it would be a pretty great film. And both Janney and Robbie were excellent in their portrayals of dysfunctional mother and daughter.
