Tanya’s Score: Good*
Rated: PG-13
Starring: Corey “What a waste” Haim; Charlie “Once was hot” Sheen; Winona “Goth cute then and now” Ryder
Plot: An awkward 14-year-old boy (Haim) falls in love, experiences heartbreak and strives for social acceptance.
Tanya’s Verdict: The only things dated about this movie are the clothes and hairstyles – everything else still works. The movie themes: feeling small and inadequate, trying to find a place in the social hierarchy within high school, navigating emotional relationships, portraying yourself as something you may not be – these are all still highly relatable to today’s teenager. All three of my kids liked it.
In Lucas, the plot is simple and the actors are fresh-faced, The story’s poignance was not lost on me as a teenager and it remains (mixed with some nostalgia) as an adult.
