Tanya’s Score: Good*
Rated: PG
Starring: a couple of Julias, a Kirsten, a Kristen, a Kristyn and a Krysten.
Plot: In the 1950s, a young art history professor (Julia Roberts) tries to open the eyes of her impressionable female students to all that is available to them beyond the traditional societal limits.
Tanya’s Verdict: I have never seen this movie before and I’ll admit – I figured it would be a typical chick-flick: feel good and fluffy. But I was pleasantly surprised.
The broad movie plot mentioned above was broken down into several unique storylines focussing on specific characters. All shared one thing in common: a female college student with her distinct cross to bear regarding her future goals. These particular burdens ranged from finding true love to breaking free from traditional female stereotypes to finding personal fulfilment at the risk of disappointing others.
The complex and unpredictable characters as well as the interweaving stories made for an interesting film which I quite enjoyed. Both my daughters fell fast asleep about half-way through. I guess you can’t please everyone.
