Tanya’s Score: Good*
Rated: PG-13
Starring: Leslie Knope (she also directs) and the spawn of The Terminator
Plot: A teenager (Hadley Robinson) authors and distributes an anonymous zine at her school calling out all sorts of sexism which leads to unrest, scrutiny and ultimately change.
Tanya’s Verdict: I watched this one with my girls and I really enjoyed it despite the fact that it’s cleverly contrived. Sure, it seems an awful lot of sexism and harassment is occurring at one school, in a limited time frame with little to no grey area where the perpetrators are involved. BUT – it opens up a whole realm of important conversations to have with kids (particularly teens) and does a good job in showing how individuals who make light of and/or try to cover up the problems are equally responsible for victimizing.
This film also touches upon the problem of taking things too far. But that’s a whole other ball of wax and with as much as this film has going on, there was only time enough to scratch at the surface of this particular issue.
So I liked it. I found it a bit too long. And while both my girls enjoyed it too – they claim it to be more of a “mom movie”. Maybe they’re right.
