Compelling storyline brought to life by strong characters – an outstanding movie.

Rated: R

Starring: that sometimes pretty, sometimes plain British girl, that cute guy with the nice voice, that bald and grumpy guy from Breaking Bad, Mary J. Blige

Plot: Two WWII soldiers – one black, one white – return to their families in rural Mississippi and form a bond with each other.

Tanya’s Verdict: It’s difficult to pinpoint one clear plot point in this Netflix original movie as there is a lot going on and the film follows a variety of character perspectives – yet from the very beginning I was hooked. The compelling storyline touches upon topics like racism, sexism, ideas about class and patriotic duty. The acting is excellent – and Mary J. Blige blew me away with her portrayal of Florence – one of the film’s strongest characters. I thought this movie was outstanding.
