Not a bad movie – just nothing all that remarkable.

Tanya’s Score: Okay-and-a-half*

Rated: PG-13

Starring: Cinderella and the Lone Ranger

Plot: A young and naive newlywed (Lily James) arrives at her husband’s (Armie Hammer) estate to discover she is destined to live in the shadow of his formidable late wife Rebecca.

Tanya’s Verdict: There is nothing wrong with this movie. It is pretty to look at, the actors are also pretty to look at and the plot is an interesting one. In fact, I almost rated this movie “Good” – but for the fact that by the next day I had already forgotten about its very existence. There is nothing truly remarkable nor memorable about it whatsoever.

Whereas the book it is based upon – written by Daphne Du Maurier in 1938 – is truly sublime. And the subsequent 1940 Alfred Hitchcock movie is dark and haunting. As for James and Hammer – they tried but they just couldn’t pull off dark and haunting. Not for me anyway.
