Tanya’s Score: Good-and-a-half*
Rated: 14A
Starring: that voice over guy; that GOOP girl; Brad Pitt
Plot: Two detectives, one on the verge of retirement (Morgan Freeman) and one just starting out (Brad Pitt) are on the hunt for a serial killer fixated by the seven deadly sins.
Tanya’s Verdict: This movie was a lot more gruesome in my memory than it is in reality. That’s the beauty of Se7en – it tells its story by leaving a lot to the imagination. That’s not to say there aren’t gruesome scenes – there are plenty. But none as awful as what was in my mind going in.
There were a couple of things that really bothered me this time around: 1. Brad Pitt’s frenetic acting; 2. the quick and deep friendship struck up between Paltrow’s and Freeman’s characters – I found it cheap and hokey.
BUT – the well-designed storyline steering us to the curveball conclusion makes up for these minor blips.
Kids enjoyed it too.
