Weird, absurd – yet interesting

Tanya’s Score: Good*

Rated: 14A

Starring: the acting stylings of the respective guys from Get Out, Call Me By Your Name and Lethal Weapon; the vocal stylings of the guys from Arrested Development and The Goldbergs

Plot: A man new to the telemarketing profession (Lakeith Stanfield) unlocks the secret to success by changing his voice.

Tanya’s Verdict: This movie is definitely interesting – it has lots of funny moments which often time, border on the absurd. A lot is going on within the plot – relating to racial inequality (main character Cassius Green finds success in the telemarketing game after he begins using his “white” voice), capitalism (characters are pushed beyond their moral comfort with the lure of money) and society in general (people are willingly joining a labour work camp in exchange for a lifetime of housing and daily comforts) . And this just scratches the surface! There are jabs at society’s obsession with trashy reality tv (a popular tv show called “I got the sh** kicked out of me is constantly being shown) as well as flash-in-the-pan viral videos turned meme (“Have a cola and smile, bitch” – watch the movie for a detailed explanation).

Definitely an original, I’m still not certain that I picked up on everything this movie was meant to highlight and dissect. If you don’t mind saying WTF once in a while as you watch a movie – then definitely give Sorry To Bother You a chance.
