Rated: 14A
Starring: a “don’t sweat it if you’ve never heard of him before – you will” Kumail Nanjiani, indie-darling Zoe Kazan, and “though I wouldn’t have pegged them as a couple, they work” Holly Hunter and Ray Romano
Plot: Based on true events, Nanjiani plays a younger version of himself – a Pakistani-born stand-up comic. After meeting and falling in love with Emily (Kazan), he is forced to face their cultural differences head on. Especially when she contracts a mysterious and potentially fatal illness and he comes face-to-face with her larger-than-life parents (Hunter and Romano).
Tanya’s Verdict: I loved it. It has all the hallmarks of an amazing film – it’s funny, it’s gut-wrenching, it’s real and it’s entertaining. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear some Oscar whispers out there soon.
