Beautifully animated, heartbreaking and inspirational.

Tanya’s Score: Good*

Rated: PG

Starring: a mix of voice actors from Afghanistan and Canada

Plot: When a young Afghani girl’s father is imprisoned by the Taliban, she impersonates a boy in order to provide for her family.

Tanya’s Verdict: This is a beautifully animated, Oscar nominated movie that shares a heartbreaking reality faced by so many people. I had to remind my kids that this is not a story taking place 100 years ago – it is something that is currently happening. Sometimes the only way to get a certain message across is through a film like this one. There is no happy ending – but viewers are left with feelings of inspiration and hope – that better things are possible.
