The book is better – but the movie is pretty good too.

Rated: 14A

Starring: unconventional beauty Brie Larson, unorthodoxically handsome Woody Harrelson, typical bombshell Naomi Watts

Plot: Based on the best-selling memoir by Jeannette Walls, the movie follows the life of young Jeannette (Larson) as she grows up with an alcoholic and impulsive father (Harrelson) and an eccentric mother (Watts). Their lives are characterized by poverty, abuse and neglect – but also a unique kind of familial love.

Tanya’s Verdict: I liked the book much better – but still enjoyed the movie. It did a good job of portraying all the characters as flawed yet still oddly sympathetic. And besides simply relating a story based on truth, the film depicts the power of familial love, the complications involved in parent/child/sibling relationships and how people are always products of their environment. Whether you are a fan of the book or have never heard of the story before – I recommend the movie.
