Rated: 14A

Plot: A lost young man (Jimmie Fails) struggles to feel at home in the city of San Francisco.
Tanya’s Verdict: There’s a term my kid uses to describe peers trying their hardest to fit in and/or be better than those around them: “sweaty try-hard“. And that’s exactly what I think of this movie.
From the very beginning, it’s begging the audience to fall in love with the beautiful imagery, unique filming technique and all-around artiness that is part and parcel to The Last Black Man in San Francisco.
This movie isn’t awful – it has its moments. But, I found it bland and forgettable yet trying so hard to achieve significance through contrived poignance.
I’m all for movies that take risks – arty or otherwise – but for some reason the quirky filming style and loose story-telling kept me outside – reminding me that I’m watching a movie that I actually find quite annoying.
