At times, dry and predictable – but still not a bad movie.

Rated: PG

Starring: Ms. Streep, Mr. Hanks and several people who happen to appear in two Oscar-nominated best pictures (Tracy Letts – also in Lady Bird; Michael Stuhlbarg – also in The Shape of Water; Bradley Whitford – also in Get Out)

Plot: Based on the true story of the first female newspaper publisher Katharine Graham (Streep) and her stalwart editor (Hanks) who together defied the government by exposing an extensive cover-up spanning over 30 years and four U.S. presidents.

Tanya’s Verdict: This film was made for an Oscar nomination. It stars two of the biggest names in Hollywood, it’s directed by Steven Spielberg and its subject matter checks all of the academy’s favourite boxes. All in all, it’s not a bad movie – especially once the ball gets rolling plot-wise about half-way through. I found the first half dull but necessary for the second half to be as riveting as it is. There’s also the added bonus of girl-power in the sense that Streep’s character goes against what the majority of men in her life are telling her to do – she stands strong with her ethics and does what she believes is the right thing – and in the end her newspaper – The Washington Post – makes history. To sum it up, the movie is somewhat predictable and dry at times – but again – not bad.
