Emotionally charged and character driven – two things I love in a film.

Tanya’s Score: Good*

Rated: PG

Starring: a bunch of very familiar Iranian actors (if you watch a lot of Iranian films)

Plot: A husband and wife both starring in a production of Death of a Salesman find themselves at odds with one another when she is the victim of an assault.

Tanya’s Verdict: I like the way this movie is a story within a story – there is the actual movie plot and then the inner story of Death of a Salesman. I also like that the movie’s plot centres around one very specific incident – this seems typical of the director although I’ve only seen a handful of his films. The story relies mainly on character as well as natural human emotion – which is something that I’m always drawn to in a movie. The theme of humiliation and how it affects different people in a variety of ways is perhaps the thread running through The Salesman from beginning to end. As much as I enjoyed this movie, it pales in comparison to the director’s 2011 film A Separation, which I found very similar to this one.
