Tanya’s Score: Great*
Rated: 14A
Starring: father of the year, Olive Oyl
Plot: A family spends the winter taking care of an isolated hotel where an evil presence affects them all.
Tanya’s Verdict: This movie is one of my all-time favourites. It is a slow and steady build-up with its intense music, bright shots and sparse dialogue. Director Stanley Kubrick is in no rush – he gets his point across through brief dialogue teamed up with facial expressions.
Jack Nicholson’s barely contained seething anger is apparent in all his scenes. Shelley Duvall’s desperation to keep her family intact no matter what it takes is apparent. And Danny Lloyd – one of the better child actors – is perfectly cast.
Stephen King lay the groundwork here – and Kubrick picked it up and ran with it. The Shining is long and slow – but it is so so worth it.
*Four score descriptions: Sh**; Okay; Good; Great
