Short, sweet and funny. Another win in my books.

Tanya’s Score: Good*

Rated: PG

Starring: the usual (Tommy and Timmy) with a few new voices including Keanu and Key and Peele.

Plot: The toys embark on a family road trip where they encounter some unexpected hitches along the way at an antique store and a carnival.

Tanya’s Verdict: I’ll admit – the plot of Toy Story 4 was far from spectacular. The toys experience challenges similar to what they’ve already undergone in the previous three incarnations: they’re at risk of being separated from their kid and from each other; they struggle with remaining relevant; they meet up with some less than savoury fellow playthings.

BUT – the movie still works. For one thing, it’s funny. I found myself laughing out loud throughout. The introduction of several new characters spice up what could otherwise be a tired old plot (Keanu is hilarious as Canadian daredevil Duke Kaboom as are Key and Peele in their respective roles of carnival toys); without spoiling anything, the plot takes a few unexpected turns here and there; I love the girl-power sub-plot where the very fate of the toys is in the hands of Bo Peep (Annie Potts) and best of all, this movie is short and sweet.

As Toy Story has done in the past, it takes some serious plot ideas such as loyalty, friendship and relevance and wraps it up in a light and funny plot. While of course leaving it open to yet another sequel.

*Four score descriptions: Sh**; Okay; Good; Great
