Tully is an unpredictable and at times hauntingly accurate portrayal of motherhood. I liked it.

Rated: 14A

Starring: the frumpy yet still gorgeous Charlize Theron

Plot: An exhausted mother of three is gifted with the temporary services of a night nanny and the two women embark on an unconventional relationship.

Tanya’s Verdict: On the surface this movie is about a woman so tired and overwhelmed that she has forgotten herself. But dig deeper and it’s about a woman mourning the loss of her former self, struggling to find her once again and bereft at the idea that she no longer exists. Personally, I liked Tully. I liked Theron’s portrayal of an emotionally (as well as physically) depleted mother. I liked the path the storyline took complete with its surprises (and there are several). And I liked the film’s unpredictability.

Despite there being quite a few laugh-out-loud moments within this film – I have no idea why it’s classified a comedy – because it’s so not a comedy.

And to all parents, a warning: a brief tableau offering up snippets of life with a newborn at the movie’s onset is so hauntingly accurate, it will trigger repressed moments awakening your parenting PTSD.
