A huge, clunky, amateurish disappointment!

Rated: 14A

Starring: the Queen of England, a Blair Witch victim . . . and Matt Damon?!

Plot: A young woman (Claire Foy) suffering from anxiety after being stalked becomes involuntarily committed to a mental facility where she comes face to face with the man (Joshua Leonard) she is running from.

Tanya’s Verdict: When I first read about this film, my interest was piqued: a creepy thriller from director Steven Soderbergh shot entirely by iPhone – sign me up! But what I got was a decidedly unrealistic (men and women sharing a room in a hospital?) and at times downright amateurish movie with clunky dialogue and distracting music.

Let me backtrack, Unsane started off fine enough – the filming was gripping and unusual (one scene in particular where Foy undergoes a drug-induced breakdown is brilliant), Foy as young professional Sawyer Valentini was interesting and sympathetic, the plot was spare yet compelling – but then about half-way through it derailed. I felt like I was in university watching yet another student film – except this one featured some big name talents! Nevertheless, I held out hope that the movie would redeem itself in the end – but then the credits rolled . . . and I realized there would be no redemption. Unsane: a big disappointment to say the least!
