Stick with the book (and forget about the film)

Rated: G

Starring: a couple of bad actors, a couple of now-dead actors, a couple of dogs

Plot: In the Ozarks during the 1960s, a young boy sets out on a quest to earn enough money to buy himself a couple of hunting hounds.

Tanya’s Verdict: This movie was not only dated, but despite being on a DVD, the quality was poor. Objectively, I could see the plot as well as acting was by no means dynamic. Yet the book of the same name is so good that I dutifully stuck it out until the end. I first read this book in Grade 8 and just recently was thinking about it. I bought a new copy and passed it along to both my girls – and they devoured it. So I also reread it – not to be disappointed – it’s just as good as I remember! The movie however is a disappointing afterthought. If you like the book Old Yeller, this book is somewhat similar in that it’s a tale revolving around dogs and may result in some tears. But while the movie Old Yeller (1957) is almost just as good as the book – not so for Where the Red Fern Grows.
