Could have been so much better.

Rated: PG-13

Starring: Margot Robbie (I’m embarrassed to admit I did not recognize her until I saw her name in the closing credits!), Chris Pine (despite his general good looks, there is something smirky and unsettling about his face to me) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (as usual, he plays an intense and compelling character)

Plot: The world has suffered a devastating disaster yet a young woman survives on her farm in an untouched valley. Her life changes with the arrival of two men and the fact that these three may be the only survivors left in existence.

Tanya’s Verdict: I read this young adult novel back in Grade 8 and from what I remember I liked it – but I believe the movie strays from the book’s original themes to add more drama, intrigue and sexual tension to the story. That said – the film has the bare bones of something solid but for me, it still falls flat somewhere along the line. Maybe it’s the fact that I just don’t believe certain characters would behave in specific ways; maybe it’s the fact that the most self-sufficient character (Robbie) is also one of the wishy-washiest at the mercy of the men in her life. If the movie was going for a strong and intense character study – it just doesn’t pull it off. And while I usually don’t mind questions being left unanswered – the ones left floating around here leave a lot to be desired.
