Found this only a few days ago in the Toronto Star and decided to give it a try. I made a few changes and it was a hit. A couple of the kids complained – but all plates were clean – a definite win! Enjoy.
Ingredients:
1 c. beef broth
1 T. soy sauce
2 t. corn starch
3 T. vegetable oil
1 t. ground turmeric
1/2 t. ground allspice
1lb. flap steak (I have no idea what this is – I used some thin cuts of beef on sale – that looked as though they’d be good in a stir fry), cut into thin strips
1/2 lb. white mushrooms, sliced
1 green pepper, seeded and cut into thin strips
1 onion, thinly sliced
4 cloves garlic, minced
salt and pepper to taste
In a bowl, whisk together broth, soy sauce and corn starch and set aside. In a large skillet over high heat, add 2 T. of the oil, then turmeric and allspice – stirring with a wooden spoon. Add beef strips and sear until browned. Season with salt and pepper and set aside.
In the same pan over medium-high heat, cook the veggies in 1 T. oil for a couple of minutes until al dente. Add the broth mixture and bring to a boil – then let simmer for an additional couple of minutes. Add the beef and mix well to coat with sauce. Adjust seasoning accordingly.
I served it over rice.
*It made enough for the five of us with a bit left over.
Awesome recipe.Simple to make too. Will definitely try it out.
