Good acting, but not very cohesive.

Tanya’s Score: Okay-and-a-half*

Rated: 14A

Starring: Glenn “I will not be ignored” Close; Amy “You’re psychotic” Adams

Plot: A Yale student (Gabriel Basso) reflects on his under-privileged upbringing in rural Ohio.

Tanya’s Verdict: The acting in this Netflix movie is worth the watch alone: Glenn Close dulls her usual polish and is wonderful as the Grandma; Amy Adams casts aside her sweet, doe-eyed looks for the complex and chaotic daughter/mother portrayal.

Based on a true story – this movie feels like a snippet rather than a complete entity with beginning, middle and end. There are compelling moments, moving moments and moments of connection – but no real cohesive thread stringing them all together. Instead, it feels like a bunch of scattered moments somehow caught on film.

*Four score descriptions: Sh**; Okay; Good; Great

  1. I liked it as a movie. Really good focus on the characters. The book was really different from what I could remember, stressing more about the way people in his community think and their difference in values. They put family and loyalty above education, etc. It really gave me a better insight into middle America.
