Tanya’s Score: Good-and-a-half*
Rated: 14A
Starring: Luke from Growing Pains, the rock star from Growing Pains, Margot Robbie
Plot: A soon-to-be has-been actor (Leonard DiCaprio) and his down-and-out stunt man (Brad Pitt) strive for fame and fortune in Hollywood in 1969.
Tanya’s Verdict: There’s two things you need to know about this film going in: 1) it’s more a character study than a plot-oriented movie and 2) it’s not typical Quentin Tarantino fare.
In my opinion, it’s pretty darned good. The characters are fantastic: Leo’s crybaby cowboy actor; Brad’s possibly good-natured, possibly lunatic stunt man; Margot’s voluptuous yet equally clueless Sharon Tate. And every other character (and there are a sh**-ton!) is fleshed out in interesting and intriguing ways.
The almost three hour movie was over in a flash – and I was pretty much riveted and entertained the entire time. Tarantino surprises, not only by going against type but by his slow and steady build-up of suspense – that most definitely pays off – but perhaps not for reasons expected.
