Plot: An in-depth documentary focussing on British singer/song-writer Amy Winehouse.
Tanya’s Verdict: This story of a talented young woman wrestling with demons unfolds gradually and in glimpses thanks to a creative blend of archival footage, music, interviews and voice overs. I particularly liked the effect of people closest to Amy Winehouse providing their insights and memories via voice over as opposed to typical documentary style interviews.
Based on footage, it soon becomes apparent who genuinely cares for this struggling artist and who is only there to take advantage of the celebrity lifestyle and cash flow.
Throughout it all, Winehouse’s transformation from budding young star to troubled addict slowly reveals itself while Amy barrels itself toward its inevitable and tragic conclusion.
