Unhurried, tense with a lot going on – pretty darned good!

Tanya’s Score: Good-and-a-half*

Rated: 14A

Starring: beacoup de personnes Francais

Plot: When a family begins receiving strange and threatening videotapes in the mail, the husband/father (Daniel Auteuil) believes it may have something to do with an incident from his childhood.

Tanya’s Verdict: There is something about Michael Haneke movies that I admire – I am spellbound by the way they unfold and the je ne sais quois that sets them apart from most other films.

The same goes for Caché. I recently read a list of a certain Toronto Star film critic’s all-time favourite movies – and Caché was on there despite the fact that I was unfamiliar with it – although not unfamiliar with Haneke. So I made it a priority to get my hands on and watch it. I was not disappointed.

The story is unhurried yet tense, and as with his other films – there is more going on than initially meets the eye. Once finished, audience members may be left with more questions, possible frustrations, maybe even dissatisfaction — but as usual – a lot to ponder. That’s what I admire most about this movie.
