A somewhat noble effort – that falls flat.

Tanya’s Score: Okay-and-a-half*

Rated: PG-13

Starring: a beautiful young man (and great actor) cut down in the prime of his life; a decidedly NOT ugly young woman; Brendan Fraser

Plot: In 1963, the lives of two teenagers (River Phoenix; Lili Taylor) become entwined through a cruel game played by a group of marines preparing to head out to Vietnam.

Tanya’s Verdict: Dogfight would have been better left in the recesses of my mind. Watching it once again in the light of three decades later, I realize the movie is very uneven. The characters are under-developed, their actions/behaviour don’t seem realistic, the storyline is weak but worst of all – none of the characters are all that likeable!

It means well – touching upon ideas of inner beauty and beauty in the eye of the beholder as well as peer pressure. But much of this effort falls flat in my opinion.

That said, one of my children enjoyed it – the rest of us merely tolerated it.
