Not half-bad for a disaster flick.

Tanya’s Score: Okay-and-a-half*

Rated: PG-13

Starring: Stoick; girl from V

Plot: As a catastrophic comet heads toward earth, one family struggles to survive.

Tanya’s Verdict: For a disaster flick, this one isn’t half-bad. I didn’t expect much – what with Gerard Butler and all (I harbour a bit of dislike toward him and his acting skills). But even I must give credit where credit is due.

Typically, my biggest beef with these types of movies is the special effects taking precedence over any real emotional story involving authentic humanity. But this one surprised me. Without getting too bogged down in family drama, Greenland cleverly reveals an emotional story through a distinct pattern of plot points – most of them playing on every parent’s worst nightmare in a number of ways. Yet this never threatens to overwhelm the disaster film element.

A win-win for everyone at my house on family movie night.
