Not awful – but a bit confusing.

Tanya’s Score: Okay-and-a-half*

Rated: PG

Starring: a bunch of cute millennials

Plot: In this sequel to Happy Death Day (2017), Tree (Jessica Rothe) discovers there’s more to her living the same day over and over than she initially believed.

Tanya’s Verdict: I liked the first film – Happy Death Day. It was a surprising blend of funny, scary, interesting and creative. It was carefully planned and well done for a teen flick. But in my opinion, this second instalment fell short when compared to the original. It was still funny, it still had a few jump scares, it was even a bit more tamer than the original in terms of violence and gore (which gave it a more kid-friendly rating this second time).

But this time around, the story was more convoluted and difficult to follow. While Tree was still dying and reliving the same day (ala Groundhog Day (1993)) so was another character and a confusing scientific experiment seemed to be at the root of the issue. Oh yeah – and there’s still a crazy killer on the loose – but who it was depends on which dimension Tree found herself in.

Happy Death Day 2U was still somewhat entertaining – just a lot more confusing this time around.
