Predictable and by-the-book

Tanya’s Score: Okay-and-a-half*

Rated: PG

Starring: Rocky Jr, Ice Cube Jr, Brie Larson

Plot: A young and idealistic civil rights lawyer (Michael B. Jordan) struggles to prove that his client on death row (Jamie Foxx) is an innocent man.

Tanya’s Verdict: This movie is a by-the-books telling of a true story. The plot is compelling – especially in the beginning. Unfortunately, it loses much of its mojo at the half-way point when it starts to get a bit tiresome. And of course it concludes the way you predict it will.

That said – it isn’t awful. And the struggles it portrays (of being poor and black in the American south) reveal important lessons to privileged and entitled kids – my privileged and entitled kids anyway.

*Four score descriptions: Sh**; Okay; Good; Great
