Terrible, nonsensical, amateur – yet hysterically funny!

Tanya’s Verdict: Sh** (as a horror)
Great* (as a comedy)

Rated: 14A

Starring: absolutely nobody

Plot: When a young girl (Felissa Rose) still suffering the consequences of her family’s horrific death is sent to summer camp with her cousin (Jonathan Tiersten), mysterious accidents keep occurring.

Tanya’s Verdict: This was my very first horror movie ever. I watched it when I was around 11 or 12 at a slumber party. And I must give credit where credit is due: this movie has paved the way for all other horror movies that I’ve seen since. In some way – it must have played a small part in fostering my love for scary movies.

I was eager to re-watch Sleepaway Camp. In my memory, there were a lot of gaps – things I just didn’t understand as a child made certain parts of the movie confusing for me.

Let me set the record straight – as far as horror movies go – this one is nothing short of terrible. The acting is beyond brutal, the dialogue is ridiculous, the effects are amateur, the plot is nonsensical. BUT – all so to great hilarity. This movie had me roaring with laughter from beginning to end – my kids too. Even my parents – who don’t generally enjoy horror movies – but do appreciate good comedy when they see it.

I highly recommend this movie – IF you are looking for a good comedy with a few overly dramatic jump scares. There are some inappropriate parts though – hence the 14A rating.

I could easily re-watch this movie every year. And plan on doing so too.

  1. Watching this movie as a senior, I was reminded of the ‘shlocky’ horror films played at drive-ins and theaters in marathon all-nighters of my youth..I usually ended up falling asleep…and I would have for this one but the roaring laughter kept me awake !!!!
