Tanya’s Score: Okay*
Rated: 18A
Starring: a bit of Fifty Shades and a whole lot of Tilda
Plot: In the 1970s, a young American dancer (Dakota Johnson) joins a prestigious dance school in Germany and makes a disturbing discovery about the sinister women in charge.
Tanya’s Verdict: I like weird. Weird can be interesting and creative and quite good. But in some cases, such as in the case of Suspiria, weird can just be weird. This movie, based on a 1977 film by the same name is weird. And long (It clocks in at two-and-a-half hours). And slow (It was a good hour before I even had an inkling as to what this movie was going on about).
Despite my not glowing score – if you are in the market for weird, grotesque, and disturbing movies; if you don’t mind a movie taking its sweet old time – for the sake of taking its sweet old time – then you may like this one. If any of this sounds even somewhat appealing to you – then I urge you to give it a chance.
If movies like The VVitch (2015) and mother! (2017) are typically your cup of tea – then I suggest you drink in Suspiria as soon as humanly possible.
In my case, I tried it. I just didn’t care for it.
