A slow, slow, slow burn – but well worth it in the end.

Tanya’s Score: Good*

Rated: 14A

Starring: pizza-guzzling Greta Gerwig; scary as sh** Tom Noonan; vocal stylings of Lena Dunham; Elliott’s mommy

Plot: During the early 80s, a broke college student (Jocelin Donahue) accepts a strange babysitting job and soon realizes what may be at stake.

Tanya’s Verdict: This movie is a slow, slow, slow burn – BUT the good news is it pays off in the end. While there are only a few jump scares, they are well-timed and excellently delivered.

Two other things I really liked about The House Of The Devil are: 1. How authentically retro it feels – the characters, as well as their respective styles, are true to the 1980s without going over the top. 2. Tom Noonan – this guy is absolutely terrifying without even trying.

If you like a creepy movie that is slow to build and action-packed in the end – then this may be one for you.

*Four score descriptions: Sh**; Okay; Good; Great
