Strong characters and compelling plot make for a pretty good horror movie.

Tanya’s Score: Good-and-a-half*

Rated: 14A

Starring: a bunch of Spaniards

Plot: A woman (Belén Rueda) and her family return to the orphanage from her childhood in order to start their own school for special needs children – when tragedy strikes.

Tanya’s Verdict: The beautiful thing about this movie is that even though it’s classified as a horror movie, it doesn’t skimp on the story or the characters.

I first watched The Orphanage when it was released – and have been patiently biding my time until my kids were old enough to read sub-titles before showing it to them.

It’s creepy without being overly gory; it has a few well-earned jump scares; the music will have you on the edge of your seat – and somehow the film’s end is capable of being both heartbreakingly sad and upliftingly hopeful.

We all enjoyed it.
