Dark and simmering

Tanya’s Score: Good*

Rate: 14A

Starring: a Canadian Sweetheart

Plot: A lawyer (Ian Holm) arrives in a small Canadian town to defend the families of children killed in a devastating school bus accident.

Tanya’s Verdict: If you are looking for a feel-good, pick-me-up of a movie – then The Sweet Hereafter may not be what you are looking for. Although it’s still an interesting film based on an equally interesting book.

Supposedly about the aftermath of a tragic accident and how it threatens to unravel the community involved – The Sweet Hereafter is actually a deeper exploration into the complications surrounding father/daughter relationships – especially when toxic.

There is a lot of simmering anger beneath the surface of this film – that comes out in revenge and payback – yet in ways that are completely unexpected and interesting.

*Four score descriptions: Sh**; Okay; Good; Great
