Maudlin, dreary, nothing special.

Tanya’s Score: Okay-and-a-half*

Rated: PG-13

Starring: one from Downton, two from Degrassi and Catherine Keener

Plot: A family struggles to cope when the eldest daughter (Hannah Gross) suddenly drops out of college and is discovered mute and living on the streets.

Tanya’s Verdict: This movie is based on the 2002 Carol Shields novel – and from what I remember, I quite enjoyed the book. The movie, on the other hand, somehow missed its mark.

While there is an air of mystery going for it (although not for me because like I said – I had already read the book), as well as some great acting, I found it otherwise to be quite maudlin. The musical score weighs down most (if not all) of the scenes and everything appears too low-key and dreary.

There is the chance that reading the book has spoiled the movie for me – but I’m not so sure.
