Not a spectacular film – though the woman depicted is.

Tanya’s Score: Good*

Rated: PG

Starring: a bunch of vaguely recognizable faces

Plot: Based on the true story of Harriet Tubman (Cynthia Erivo) – a woman who escaped slavery in the 1800s and put her life on the line in order to help hundreds of slaves reach freedom via the Underground Railroad.

Tanya’s Verdict: I will admit – I waffled between Okay and Good on this one. The movie itself is nothing all that spectacular – it’s pretty much a by-the-numbers account of Harriet Tubman. Yet the story itself is so amazing and Tubman’s actions selfless and heroic that I couldn’t bear rating it anything less than Good. Plus my daughters enjoyed it and I could see that the story moved them both.

Something noteworthy – despite the PG rating, there are several upsetting scenes of violence as well as swearing. I think the censors were a bit more lax with this one considering the historical significance.

*Four score descriptions: Sh**; Okay; Good; Great
